Dead unfit

Today I cycled to work in what is supposed to be the start of my fitness drive. Having cycled nowhere of distance in a good 9 months I knew it would get the heart racing a little.

Erm… how wrong was ?!

I’m unfortunate in that the first half of the journey is up hill, but they aren’t seriously steep. It was on these hills where my shocking lack of fitness kicked in. My legs felt like they were on fire and I was panting and wheezing as if I’d run the Flora London Marathon at the weekend. Sure, I made it to work ok, but it was quite a frightening wake up call for someone who thought he was “a bit unfit” up until today.

I manage to get through five a side on a Wednesday night without too much trouble, usually, with a stint in goal to get my second wind. It’s painfully obvious that I’ve been pacing myself at five’s, though – I probably would have collapsed if I’d put any real effort into it.

At least I know the extent of my unfitness now, and can begin the long haul back to cardiovascular equilibriance… or whatever. Anyhow, let me ask you… sitting in front of the computer as you are… when was the last time you got your heart rate going… and I don’t mean by looking at Bangable?

Music to my ears

I got myself a new stereo system at last. It’s a really nice Sony (natch) CD/MD/Tape/Tuner unit and although not as hi end as George‘s new system it wasn’t as expensive either. (I’d still kill for his speakers, though!)

It’s great to be able to listen to CD’s again without either playing them on the PC or on the PS2, neither of which are really the tool for the job. The sound is fantastic from the new stereo, and kind of emphasises the failings in my old Kenwood seperates that we gave to my cousin when we moved last.

To celebrate my new found audio paradise I spent the afternoon recording myself a minidisc full of retro 90’s dance tunes, just for fun. I’m easily pleased when I have a new toy.

Glad that one’s over

What a weird week. I have to say that I’m glad it’s the weekend now, as there have been so many ups and downs I just want to have a rest from it all.

What sucks is that there were several good things that happened this week which would normally have made me pretty pleased. But these were tamed somewhat by some bad things that happened, to the extent that on a scale of bad and good the week has pretty much been a downer.

Today has been a departure from bad things, so far. I got my money back from that fraud thing that happened a few weeks ago. Quite pleased with that, really, as I was starting to worry that it was four hundred pounds I’d never see again.

I’ve also arrived at a point where I’m several days ahead of where I thought I’d be in my project at work. This is tops because I can now concentrate on doing some Very Cool Stuff ™ that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.

Due to the above, next week could go pretty well, which would be a nice change. If it begins with the arrival of yet another Order That Time Forgot ™ from Scan Hardware, I might even jump for joy!
