Ramping up again

Ever since I was in single digits, I’ve been fascinated by skateboarding. From the plastic yellow deck with the red polyurethane wheels that I had in the early 80’s to the Lib Tech maple & fibreglass deck with jet black Spitfire wheels I’ve used so sparingly over the last ten years, and all the others in between, I’ve skated on and off on all shapes and sizes of skateboards for thirty years.

I’ve seen the sport go from boom to bust, to boom again, before skateboarding finally achieved the critical mass that made it part of pop culture and here to stay. What’s unfortunate is that I haven’t had many friends to skate with over the years, which has led to it being a somewhat lonely pastime for me and caused my interest to run in cycles.

Hot Wheels to recall over 90% of models

For Hot Wheels, strong sales during the festive season should have marked an end to the bleak outlook for investors during the downturn. However, there were rumours at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show earlier this month that disgruntled employees were set to lift the lid on some dark secrets that had been brewing behind closed doors.

Then, yesterday afternoon, a whistle blowing employee dropped the bombshell that there are allegedly steering defects in nine out of ten models to leave the production line. This has still to be confirmed, but the saftety implications have already rocked consumer confidence, with those who acquired a Hot Wheels auto-mobile within the last few months demanding answers from the embattled Mattel subsidiary.

Challenging everything

If you know me well enough, you’ll know I like to give myself challenges. These can range from something ultimately trivial – such as collecting wrist bands, to something exceptionally trivial – such as not listening to Bohemian Rhapsody for a year.

Sometimes they can have important health benefits, like doing more cycling or switching to soya milk. Other times they can be to help me learn something, like my abandoned places photography challenge which is both ongoing and designed to help me get better at taking pictures. Much of the time they’re just for fun, but if I can mix it up and improve myself in some way, so much the better.
